The Essence of Nell Harper

Nell Harper was founded by me, Jess, then quickly joined by Alia, who added the attention to detail and materiality that our products have become known for….Alia's attention to detail and perfectionism comes from a background in architecture and interior design-where she developed an understanding of the 'narrative' that exists between the materials

Our work is about finding the beauty in simplicity, quality of materials and traditional crafting skills, along with clean lines that form classic shapes with a strong emphasis on function.
We believe strongly in the art of making something that requires a connection between the maker and the materials used, valuing our traditions and simplicity, which is why hand sewing features in each piece of work we produce. Our perfectionism can drive ourselves and those around us 'crazy', but we also know it's essential in order to produce the quality that we insist upon for ourselves and our customers.


Nell Harper bags are made using quality vegetable tanned leather, which has quality and will age beautifully. It’s thick, soft, supple, but also has structure and comes from the Tuscany area of Italy. It gains its suppleness from the ‘milling’ process each hide goes through. Vegetable tanned leather will vary in color and have marks-the marks show the life of the cow, again adding a uniqueness to each handmade item. Over time the leather will tell the story of your journey with it, absorbing the environment-developing a beautiful patina.

The thread is a hand waxed thread that is very tough and durable. It is 1mm thick, rot resistant and UV protected so it will not fade in sunlight.

The hardware we use is solid brass for all our products, which will darken over time but will not rust, unlike coated steel.

We hand stitch all of our bags, using a traditional 'saddle stitch', which makes the stitch tough and long-lasting as each stitch has an individual knot, meaning that

Buyers are responsible for submitting a shipping address correctly. We are not responsible for checking if your address is correct. If an incorrect address is provided we will not be able to refund your order unless the item is returned intact. If the item is returned the buyer is responsible for any cost to reship. 

 Within the UK, we ship everything by UPS with tracking, unless the buyer needs or wants to upgrade that service it will be at the buyers expense. We cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen items in the mail. All packages come with tracking so that you can follow your item in the mail. 

We are not responsible for custom charges, we declare the full value of all items on the customs form and mark it as gift. If you wish for us to not declare the full value of the item you need to let us know. But we will not be able to give back the full value of the item if its lost or stolen, only the amount that was declared. 

    INTERNATIONAL BUYERS We ship internationally using Parcel force. Currently we mark all orders as tracked and insured to ward against any losses which may be suffered at the hands of the postage depots.
We will always try to dispatch your goods within 1-2 weeks of receipt of order due to the nature of your order being handmade. These times are guidelines, so we will endeavour to dispatch your order as soon as it is complete.
Within the UK, orders are sent to you via UPS and will require a signature on delivery. Orders sent within the UK should arrive on the day after dispatch, except for outlying areas. Please allow more time for delivery at busy periods like Christmas. Should the recipient not be at the delivery address provided the UPS the courier will attempt a second delivery
 Unfortunately, we are not responsible for damage which occurs after the goods have been handed to the postal or courier service. However, should you be unfortunate enough to receive damaged goods, let us know immediately. Please retain all relevant documentation so that we can make an insurance claim against the carrier's insurers. If the parcel you receive is damaged, please note the fact when you sign for it, even before you open the parcel to examine the contents. If you are unable to open the damaged package in the presence of the carrier, make sure that you sign for it as "Damaged package; goods not yet inspected" to warn the carrier that a claim may follow.


  • Refund and Exchange

    All items leaving the Nell Harper studio only do so after passing our quality control standards. Each item is packed securely for travel. If your item is damaged in transit please return within 7 days for UK customers and 30 days for international customers from time of receipt. 
    If you require a refund or exchange please return your order within 7 days, UK customers, and 30 days international customers, unused and undamaged. 
    All refunds are made back to the payment type used at checkout.
